Base Metals

Zinc

Zinc is a brittle metal with a shiny grey appearance when free from oxidation.

The primary application of zinc is in the corrosion protection of iron through zinc plating (hot-dip galvanizing).

Zinc has a more negative value in the electrochemical potential series compared to iron, which allows it to act as an anode and provide cathodic protection against corrosion. Galvanization is one of the most common uses for this property.

Other applications of zinc include its use in electrical batteries, small non-structural castings, and alloys such as brass.

Base Metals

Lead

Lead is a dense, soft, and malleable metal, with a low melting point. It has a shiny grey colour with a hint of blue when freshly cut. It is used in car batteries, ammunition production, and radiation shielding.

Copper

Copper is a reddish, ductile metal. It is an excellent conductor of electricity and heat. Its most common applications, in order of usage, are in power generation and transmission facilities, construction, and transportation machinery and equipment.

Nickel

Nickel is a lustrous, silvery-white metal with a slight golden tinge. Nickel is used in a wide range of industrial and consumer products, including stainless steel, magnets, coins, and special alloys. It is also employed to give glass a green tint.

Primarily, nickel is an alloy metal, which is why it has numerous applications as a component in various alloys.
